The Turnbull Government has achieved a new low in foresight, credibility and competence after unveiling its plan for a National Energy Guarantee (NEG). Coined as a “coal energy target” by state representatives, the response to the proposed energy policy was one of disbelief for the lack of details and modelling for the scheme. Ironically the ACT has a 100% Renewable Energy Target (RET) by 2020, to be achieved through a combination of wind and solar farms. Other RETs throughout Australia:
- Victoria – 40% by 2025
- Queensland and the Northern Territory – 50% by 2030
- South Australia – already at 50% and looking to add more, not least through their new 150MW Solar Thermal Power Station at Port Augusta which is replacing some of Australia’s oldest and dirtiest brown coal power plants and is scheduled for completion by 2020.
